BIMI arrived and is on the inbox scene, but it’s more than just a visual of authenticity for recipients. It’s also a powerful marketing tool for brands.

Our past articles have covered everything you need to know about BIMI:

Now, we’re diving into how (and why) you can use BIMI to better market your brand in the inbox.

Quick recap: What is BIMI?

According to the creators of BIMI, “Brand Indicators for Message Identification or BIMI (pronounced: bih-mee) is an emerging email specification that enables the use of brand-controlled logos within supporting email clients.”

Simply put, with BIMI, you can have your logo appear in customers’ and prospects’ inboxes, like this:

with and without bimi

There are a multitude of benefits to this, which we covered in our previous post: The benefits of BIMI – and how to get ready for it. But there are also steps you need to take before being able to implement— and therefore reap the benefits of — BIMI as an email standard.

DMARC enforcement and BIMI technical requirements

To be eligible for BIMI, you must take precautions to secure your emailing domain(s). As a reminder, the steps are:

  • Authenticate all of your emails with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC
    • Ensure domain alignment (the domain used by SPF and DKIM is the same as the one used by DMARC)
  • Ensure your DMARC policy is at enforcement
    • This means either “p=quarantine” or “p=reject”
    • No sp=none and no pct<100
  • Publish a BIMI record for your domain in DNS

When you have a DMARC policy in place, set to either quarantine (send to the spam folder) or reject (delete) emails that don’t authenticate, you eliminate the possibility of someone spoofing your domain.

This is an ongoing security process that you should perform to secure your customers’ and prospects’ inboxes and prevent phishing attacks against your brand.

Other added benefits of DMARC enforcement include a boost in email delivery rates.

For detailed steps on how to get your organization into DMARC enforcement, see our previous post in this series.

However, there are also technical requirements for logo compatibility.

In order to properly implement BIMI with a VMC, you need a proven (trademarked) logo and follow file specifications for the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) image. To understand in-depth how to ensure your logos will pass muster, see our post, how to create a BIMI-compatible logo using SVG images. If you don’t have a trademark, you can still get BIMI through obtaining a CMC.

How to market your brand with BIMI

Which email would you be more likely to click on: one showing a generic grey circle with a company’s initials or one showcasing a logo?

The importance of personalization and customer experience has grown significantly in the last few years. In fact, 80% of customers are more likely to make a purchase when they’re served a more personalized experience.

And email, though now considered by many to be more “old-school” in marketing, still leads the race in marketing ROI. So by using BIMI, you give your customers an experience that is more personalized, trustworthy, and engaging.

With BIMI installed your customers and prospects will know that they can trust any emails that come from your brand—and that’s great! The trustworthiness of your emails, alone, will increase your engagement.

If you want to see what your potential engagement could be, use Valimail’s BIMI Simulator. Visualize what your emails will look like and understand how many brand impressions you’ll receive. You can even get inspired by examples and know which domains are eligible for BIMI.

7 ways BIMI enhances your marketing in the inbox

Here’s how you can optimize BIMI to better market your brand:

  1. Consistent branding in every inbox
    • Ensure a uniform brand image appears across email platforms, enhancing brand recall and recognition.
  2. Establish trust and authenticity
    • Use your logo as a visual assurance of email authenticity, building trust and reducing the risk of brand impersonation.
  3. Enhance email open rates
    • Increase your emails’ visual appeal and immediate recognition with a recognizable logo to boost engagement.
  4. Use your logo as a marketing tool
    • Optimize and occasionally vary your logo for email to align with your brand identity and provide visual cues for special campaigns or events.
  5. Enhance customer experience
    • Provide a secure and visually appealing email experience to enhance customer engagement and trust.
  6. Compete with differentiation
    • Differentiate your brand in the inbox and boost brand perception by being an innovative and customer-centric early adopter of BIMI.
  7. Analyze and adapt
    • Gather feedback, analyze data related to email engagement post-BIMI, and optimize your strategies based on insights.

Manage your logos with ease

As an early adopter of BIMI (or BIMI-readiness), you are already committed to using best practices to keep your organization—and everyone you interact with—safe from phishing attacks.

DMARC enforcement alone is an ongoing process that requires maintenance, not a one-time project. But maintaining your BIMI logo doesn’t have to be a headache.

With Valimail Amplify, you can host a library of images and use a drop-down select menu to determine which logo you’ll use for your BIMI display. As long as all of the requirements are met, you’ll have no additional steps to take in order to ensure that your logo renders properly in the inbox.
