DMARC adoption momentum builds in Japan in 2024

Explore 2024 DMARC adoption trends among Japan’s .jp domains, the impact of new sender requirements, BIMI growth, and how to improve email security beyond p=none.

Let’s take a peek at the same data we used in our last DMARC analysis but through a different lens. This time around, we’re still looking at the “ten million domains” data set but restrict it to show us only domains that end in the .jp top-level domain (TLD).

The number of Japanese .jp domains varies month by month, making percentage growth comparisons a bit trickier in just that slice of the data set, but we can work with that.

Every month, we log the DMARC records (and other DNS settings) for this domain set, providing a unique insight into how the DMARC industry is evolving. This data set was specifically chosen to reduce concerns around vendor bias; this isn’t a list of domains defined by any particular DMARC vendor; it’s simply a snapshot list of top domains as defined by an unrelated third party.

Keep reading to learn how DMARC adoption is growing among Japan’s .jp domains, what’s driving the change, and how your domain can boost its security.

Breaking down the .jp domain DMARC adoption data

DMARC Growth in Japan (Top Ten Million) chart

Like the broader snapshot of DMARC growth in the top ten million, DMARC adoption among Japanese .jp domains grew significantly in 2024. The biggest boost appears to be aligned with the new Yahoo and Google sender requirements

As with the global data, the vast majority of those implementing DMARC records chose to implement a policy of p=none, meaning their domains, while compliant with the new sender requirements, are not protected from phishing and spoofing.

It’s a great start! Nearly 25,000 Japanese .jp domains from the data set have DMARC implemented! This is about 35% of the total Japanese .jp domains found in the top ten million domains as of August 2024.

As adoption grows, the next crucial step is for .jp domain owners to move beyond basic compliance and fully secure their domain. Understanding and acting on these insights can help elevate your domain’s security posture and protect your brand from the rising tide of email threats.

The state of BIMI among Japanese .jp domains

Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) sender logos are growing overall globally, with more than 21,000 of the top ten million domains publishing a BIMI record as of August 2024. But when it comes to Japanese .jp domains, uptake isn’t as robust. Only around 80 domains out of the 69,000 domains monitored have published a BIMI record. BIMI uptake in the data is showing growth month over month, but we’re dealing with very small numbers.

While Japan is one of the recognized regions where a VMC can be obtained in cooperation with a Japanese trademark, this data suggests that when it comes to BIMI, adoption in Japan is currently quite limited. This means that your brand has the chance to really stand out right now.

Protect your Japanese domain with a strong DMARC policy

As mentioned, around 22,000 of the nearly 25,000 domains monitored have a policy of p=none and would be better served and protected by moving to a DMARC policy of p=quarantine or p=reject.

If that’s how your own domains are configured today, we can guide you through the process of moving up to full protection. Start your journey toward full DMARC protection today!
